Driving to Nauvoo in the Flood Waters

We went to Keokuk tonight to grocery shop and go out to dinner. The road is amazing. They literally built a gravel road on top of the existing highway. It sits about 3 feet higher than the road beneath it and is now completely surrounded by water. It Started as a one lane road and the traffic was terrible. Now it is two lanes one going each direction.

The water washes up against the barrier and waves occasionally splash over the road but it feels safe and I am amazed at the efforts that have been put into keeping the Keokuk/Hamilton bridge open.

Unfortunately the Ft Madison bridge was closed this morning and if it has reopened I have not heard. The road on the Niota, Illinois side is covered with water and cars keep stalling out. Burlington is still closed so we are very grateful for the folks who have worked so hard to keep our Keokuk bridge open and safe to drive across.

Thank you so much for the photos and the updates. I've been watching for information every day for the past week. Just today I found your blog on my google search. We live in Washington State and our family has been planning a church history trip for nearly a year. We will be arriving in Nauvoo on the 15th of July and are a bit apprehensive with all the flooding going on. Our prayers are with all those who have lost their homes. Thank you...you have the best pictures and information I have seen:)

It's really sad to see all of these pictures, but I'm glad that you and so many others are doing all they can to protect the sites and keep the rest of us all over the country updated. I lived in Nauvoo for a semester four years ago and am planning a trip back in August with my sister, so Nauvoo has a special place in my heart.I'm a bit worried though because in a couple weeks the church is having an EFY session there. I hope the floods don't ruin that experience for the kids.

What a great blog! Thanks. My husband, Jacob Hamblin, and I and two 10,11 year-old grandaughters are making a trip to Nauvoo and Branson in about 2 1/2 weeks. Even it is still wet, we are really looking forward to experiencing Nauvoo and the surrounding historic area. Joan H.
